Tom says: The slightly untidy cousin of calabrese, broccoli provides you with the first harvests of the year in January-April. The sweet, earthy flavour complements all kinds of dishes from Asian inspired stir-fries to Sunday roasts.
Special Broccoli for spring OR autumn sowing - Sow February-June & September-October. Harvest May-October & March-April.
Sow thinly into a finely raked seedbed at a depth of 13mm (½") and cover lightly with soil. Germination usually takes 7-10 days. Transfer seedlings when large enough to handle allowing 60cm (24") between plants each way. Seeds can also be sown in a propagator in March and placed on a windowsill or in a greenhouse at approximately 10-16°C (50-60°F) to germinate and planted out 5-8 weeks later. Water well during spells of dry weather. Protect with netting to prevent cabbage butterfly attacks. Maturity 60-65 days after planting out.
